Humility of The Imaams of The Salaf – [A Brief Acquaintance]

It was said to Imaam Ahmad [rahimahullaah]: May Allaah reward you for the good you have [done] for Islaam. He said: Rather, Allaah has [done] good for me through Islaam. Who am I, and what am I?

[Siyar A’laam Nubulaa: 11/225]

Sufyaan Bin Uyaynah [rahimahullaah] said:

Indeed, I become angry with myself when I see you come to me, and I say to myself: These people have not come to me, except due to the good thoughts they have about me.’

[Hilyatul Awliyaa: 7/285]

Has a Huge Library, Memorises and Understands, But Acts Little -[Sharing a Short Reminder From Shaikh Uthaymeen]

Shaikh Uthaymeen [rahimahullaah] said,

“O student of knowledge! Seek knowledge. And be not like some people who have [nothing], except a collection of books; he memorises and understands a lot, but acts very little. So, be a seeker of knowledge, one who acts [and] a caller to truth. Therefore, [it should be] three affairs: Firstly, to be truthful in pursuit of knowledge. Secondly, act upon it. Thirdly, call to it.”

The Door of Success And Well-being Shut In Front of The People Due to Six Affairs – [O Allaah! Protect Us, Grant Us The Tawfeeq to Repent, Forgive Us And Grant Us Husnul Khaatimah.. Aameen]

The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: Shaqeeq Ibn Ibraaheem [rahimahullaah] said: ”The door of success and well-being are shut in front of the people due to six reasons: ‘Preoccupation with the blessings of [Allaah], whilst they are ungrateful; desire for knowledge, whilst abandoning action; rushing towards sin, whilst delaying repentance; being honoured with companionship of the righteous people, whilst not following their deeds; the worldly life elapses, whilst they run after it and the afterlife is approaching them, whilst they turn away from it.”

I [i.e. Ibnul Qayyim] say: The basis of this is due to not having a fervent desire and fear, weakness in one’s certainty, short-sightedness, lowliness of the soul and exchanging that which is better for that which is lower; for if the soul [of this person] was noble, it would not have been pleased with something lower [or inferior].

Reflection: The Evil End of An Obstinate Tyrant and His Sinful Blind Followers

How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir’aun’s (Pharaoh) people] left.

And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places,

And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight!

Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt).

And the heavens and the earth wept not for them , nor were they given a respite.

Our Lord Forbade Us From Corrupting The Earth After It Was Set In Order Through His Messengers

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said that Shu’aib [alayhis-salaam] said to his people:

[وَلَا تُفۡسِدُواْ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بَعۡدَ إِصۡلَـٰحِهَا‌ۚ – And do not mischief on the earth after it has been set in order] – Meaning: Do not commit acts of disobedience [in the earth] after Allaah has already set it in order through His command that justice be established and by sending Messengers [i.e. Messengers who came to convey Tawheed and all virtuous deeds; forbid Shirk and all evil deed].

Hearts Are Always In Need of Reminder Regarding What Allaah Revealed Because An Absence of Reminder Hardens Them

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe [in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism] to be affected by Allah’s Reminder [this Qur’an], and that which has been revealed of the truth, lest they become as those who received the Scripture [the Taura (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] before, and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened? And many of them were Fasiqun [rebellious, disobedient to Allah].

[Soorah Al-Hadeed: Ayah: 16]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

And when it is the case that Eemaan necessitates humility and calls for it, therefore they were called [to move up] from the station of Imaan to the station of Ihsaan; Meaning, ‘’Has the time not come for them to reach Ihsaan through Imaan and actualize that through their submission to Allaah’s Reminder [The Qur’aan], which Allaah sent down to them. Ibn Mas’ood [radiyallaahu-anhu] said, ‘’There was only four years between our [embracing] Islaam and [the revelation of this] admonition to us. [Ref 1]

And regarding the statement of Allaah:

وَلَا يَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِن قَبْلُ فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَمَدُ فَقَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ ۖ وَكَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ

Lest they become as those who received the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] before, and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened?’’

Imaam as-Saa’di [rahimahullaah] said:

That is: Do not become like those to whom Allaah revealed the book, which obligates humility and complete submission on the hearts; but they [i.e. those who received the scripture] neither preserved [the scripture] nor were they firm [in holding unto it]; rather the term was prolonged for them whilst they continued upon heedlessness, so their Eemaan dwindled and their certainty ceased. So, the hearts are always in need of a reminder regarding that which Allaah has revealed and the wisdom behind it. It is not permissible to be heedless of that, for indeed that is a cause for the hardening of the hearts. [Ref 2]

A Calamity That Will Occur When Scholars Are Absent – By Shaikh Abdullaah Al-Bukhaari

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

The Messenger of Allaah (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said:

“Verily, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people, but He takes it away by taking away (the lives of) the religious scholars till none of the scholars remains alive. Then the people will take ignorant ones as their leaders, who, when asked to deliver religious verdicts, will issue them without knowledge, the result being that they will go astray and will lead others astray.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Al-Haafidh Al-Qurtubiy (rahimahullaah) stated in Al-Mufhim: ‘’This text (proves) that indeed the disappearance of knowledge will not be by way of removing it from the hearts (of the people); but (its disappearance) will be through the death of the scholars. (Then) the ignorant people will remain- those who will occupy the place of the scholars in the (field) of giving verdicts and teaching. They will teach and give verdicts based on ignorance, so ignorance will spread and become manifest.’’ [End of quote]

Then Shaikh Abdullaah Al-Bukhaari (may Allaah preserve him) said after the above quote: ‘’So if the ‘Sound Sunni knowledge’ is taken away, then acting upon it will be taken away…is that not the case? When ignorance manifests, acting upon it will become manifest; so both knowledge and acting upon (Knowledge) will disappear. Ignorance will manifest and acting upon (ignorance) will become widespread just as Al-Haafidh Al-Qurtubiy (rahimahullaah) clarified in Al-Mufhim.”

Reflection: They Uttered Erroneous Statements About Allaah Due to Foolishness

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] stated that the believers amongst the Jinn said:

وَأَنَّهُ ۥ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيہُنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ شَطَطً۬ا

“And that the foolish among us used to utter against Allah that which was wrong and not right.” – Meaning: A statement that is deviated from what is correct and exceeding the limits of [what is permissible]. And nothing else led him [i.e. the utterer of such statement] to that except his foolishmess and weak intellect, for if he was composed and [in a state of] tranquillity, he would have known how to speak.
