Riches, Poverty, Scarcity and Abundance Are a Trial Through Which Allaah Makes Known Those Exercise Patience and Those Who Are Grateful

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said:

فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ

وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ

As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says [puffed up]: “My Lord has honoured me. But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me!”

[89:15-16]

Reminders from Above Aayaat

When tried with richness and wealth, and given in abundance, he says that his lord has honoured him due to what he has been given. And when afflicted with poverty, he says that his lord has degraded him. However, this view of his is not correct; rather he should praise Allaah in both circumstances-in times of poverty and richness. [Ref 1]

The human is ignorant and unjust. He has no knowledge of the final end results of events. He thinks that the situation in which he finds himself is to continue and will never cease. He thinks that the kind treatment and blessings he receives from Allaah in the worldly life is an indication that he is honoured by Allaah and that he is one close to Him. However, not everyone who receives Allaah’s blessings in this worldly life is one honoured by Allaah, and not everyone whom Allaah afflicts with poverty is one humiliated by Allaah; rather riches and poverty, scarcity and abundance are a trial and a test by way of which Allaah makes known those who will show gratitude and those who will exercise patience. [Ref 2]

How Can The Human Being Turn Away From Allaah?! [O Allaah! Include Us Amongst Those Who Constantly Remember You]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الْإِنسَانُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ الْكَرِيمِ

ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّٮٰكَ فَعَدَلَكَ

فِي أَيِّ صُورَةٍ مَّا شَاءَ رَكَّبَكَ

O man! What has made you careless concerning your Lord, the Most Generous? Who created you, fashioned you perfectly, and gave you due proportion; in whatever form He willed, He put you together. [82:6-8]

Few Reminders from The Above Aayah:

Have you [i.e. the human] become negligent regarding the rights of Allaah; or do make a mockery of the punishment He has promised [the evil doers]; or do you disbelieve in His Recompense?! Is He is not the One Who created you, fashioned you perfectly in the best of forms and gave you due proportion? Is it befitting that you disbelieve in the blessings of your Lord or wilfully deny the kindness of the one who showed you kindness? Indeed, this behaviour of yours is out of nothing else, except due to your ignorance, unjust behaviour, obstinacy and thoughtlessness. So, praise Allaah for not making your image similar to that of a dog, a donkey or what is similar to them. And because of this, Allaah said: [فِي أَيِّ صُورَةٍ مَّا شَاءَ رَكَّبَكَ -In whatever form He will, He put you together].

One of The Reasons Behind An Ungrateful Servant’s Evil Behaviour

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said in Surah Al-Alaq Aayaat 6-7:

كَلَّا إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَيَطْغَىٰ

أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَىٰ

Nay! Verily, man does transgress all bounds (in disbelief and evil deed, etc.). Because he considers himself self-sufficient.

Reminders from the Above Aayaat

He considers himself self-sufficient – not in need of his Lord and not in need of obedience to his Lord. This view of his is the cause of every destruction and transgression. It distances him from servitude to Allaah and the fact that he is completely in need of Allaah. [Ref 1]

Due to his ignorance and wrongdoing, he transgresses after considering himself self-sufficient; rebels and becomes haughty towards guidance [i.e. the guidance sent down by Allaah]. He forgets that he will finally return to his Lord and he fears not the recompense [on the day of judgement]; rather he might reach such a state that he abandons guidance and call others to abandon it, such as forbidding (others) from performing the prayer which is the best act of Eemaan. [Ref 2]

One of The Reasons Why The Human Might Acknowledge Truth, But Gives Preference to Falsehood

Al-Allaamah Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Yahyah Al-Mu’allimee [rahimahullaah] stated:

The human being does not [initially] hate truth because of considering it to be falsehood; rather he [or she] loves truth by way of his [or her] Fitra [natural inclination] and loves falsehood due to his [her] desires and lusts. The shift towards success or loss defends on what he [or she] gives preference.

Allaah [The Blessed and Exalted] said:

Then, for him who Tagha (transgressed) and preferred the life of this world (by following his evil desires and lusts), Verily, his abode will be Hell-fire; But as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires, and lusts. Verily, Paradise will be his abode.” [An-Naazi’aat. Ayah:37-41]

Reflection

It is He Who made the sun a shining thing and the moon as a light and measured out its (their) stages, that you might know the number of years and the reckoning. Allah did not create this but in truth. He explains the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in detail for people who have knowledge. Verily, in the alternation of the night and the day and in all that Allah has created in the heavens and the earth are Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) for those people who keep their duty to Allah, and fear Him much.

Reflection

O mankind! Remember the Grace of Allah upon you! Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the sky (rain) and the earth? La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). How then are you turning away (from Him)? And if they belie you (O Muhammad), so were Messengers belied before you. And to Allah return all matters (for decision).

Reflection

Verily! Allah grasps the heavens and the earth lest they move away from their places, and if they were to move away from their places, there is not one that could grasp them after Him. Truly, He is Ever Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.

Reflection

Whosoever desires honour, power and glory then to Allah belong all honour, power and glory [and one can get honour, power and glory only by obeying and worshipping Allah (Alone)]. To Him ascend (all) the goodly words, and the righteous deeds exalt it (the goodly words i.e. the goodly words are not accepted by Allah unless and until they are followed by good deeds), but those who plot evils, theirs will be severe torment. And the plotting of such will perish.

Some of The Consequences of Our Evil Deeds On Earth – By Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah (The Most High) said:

ظَهَرَ ٱلۡفَسَادُ فِى ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ أَيۡدِى ٱلنَّاسِ لِيُذِيقَهُم بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِى عَمِلُواْ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡجِعُونَ

‘’Evil (sins and disobedience of Allah, etc.) has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned.’’ (Soorah Ruum; Ayah:41]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim(rahimahullaah) said:

This ayah was revealed regarding the state of affairs of the world- the relationship between it and the events that occur. You see how the occurrence of those evil actions and defects (of the people) affects the harvest, vegetation and the animals in every era, and the manner in which those evil (affairs) necessitates other evils. And whenever the people initiate oppression and wickedness, their Lord (The Blessed and Most High) brings about- from those evils and defects (of theirs)- deficiencies and harm in their nourishments, fruits, atmospheres, bodies, physical natures, outward appearances and manners, as a justification for their deeds, acts of oppression and wickedness.

Indeed, the grains of wheat and other than them used to be bigger than what they are today, just as the blessing in them was greater. Imaam Ahmad (rahimahullaah) narrated with his chain of transmission that a packet was found in one of the treasury departments of Bani Umayyah in which there was a grain nearly the size of a date. This grain was grown and harvested during an era of justice.

The majority of the illnesses and the general evil affairs are remnants of the punishment afflicted upon the people of the previous nations; then there remained from that what remains, as a surprise punishment against those who remain upon the (evil) deeds of those previous nations. This is a just judgement and just decree.  And indeed the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) has indicated to this in his statement concerning plagues, that ”it is a remnant of an affliction or punishment that was sent by Allaah to the Children of Israa’eel.’’

Seek The Company of Righteous And Distance Yourself From Those Deceived By The Dunyaa

And keep yourself (O Muhammad) patiently with those who call on their Lord (i.e. your companions who remember their Lord with glorification, praising in prayers, etc., and other righteous deeds, etc.) morning and afternoon, seeking His Face, and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, one who follows his own lusts and whose affair (deeds) has been lost.
