[4] Series: Ahaadeeth Related to Uloom Al-Qur’aan – [A Hadeeth Narrated By Jundub Bin Sufyaan Regarding The Revelation of Aayaat 1 – 3′ Surah Ad-Duhaa]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Narrated Jundub bin Sufyan [radiyallaahu anhu]: Once Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayi wasallam] became sick and could not offer his night prayer (i.e.Tahajjud prayers) for two or three nights. Then a lady [the wife of Abu Lahab] came and said, “O Muhammad! I think that your satan has forsaken you, for I have not seen him with you for two or three nights!” On that Allaah revealed: “By the forenoon [after sunrise]; and by the night when it darkens [and stands still]; your Lord [O Muhammad] has neither forsaken you nor hates you.” [Surah Ad-Duhaa’ Aayaat 1-3]

Al-Bukhaari [rahimahullaah] said, “Chapter: The Statement of Allaah: “Your Lord [O Muhammad] has neither forsaken you nor hates you.” [The Arabic word that is translated as ‘has forsaken you’ can be read in two ways: with emphasis [i.e. Wadda’aka] or without emphasis [i.e. Wada ‘aka]. The meaning of both is the same, [(your Lord) has (not) forsaken you]. Ibn ‘Abbas said: The Verse means: ‘He has not forsaken you, nor does He hate you.” [Bukhaari Hadeeth Number 4950]

[1] Series: Ahaadeeth Related to Uloom Al-Qur’aan -[Few Fawaa’id Extracted From a Hadeeh Reported By Aa’isha Regarding How the Divine Revelation Started to Be Revealed to Allaah’s Messenger]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Narrated Aa’isha- the Mother of the faithful believers: The commencement of the (Divine) Revelation to Allaah’s Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] was in the form of good righteous (true) dreams which came true like bright daylight, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him. He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira’ where he used to worship (Allah Alone) continuously for many nights before returning to (or his desire to see) his family. He used to take with him- on the journey- food for the stay and then come back to (his wife) Khadeejah [radiyallaahu-anhaa] to take his food likewise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira’. The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet replied, “I do not know how to read.” The Prophet added, “Then the angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, ‘I do not know how to read.’ Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, ‘I do not know how to read (or what shall I read?)’. Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, ‘Read in the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists). Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous.'” (V.96:1-3) Then Allah’s Messenger returned with the Revelation and with his heart beating severely.

Then he went to Khadeejah bint Khuwailid [radiyallaahu-anhaa] and said, “Cover me! Cover me!” They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told Khadeejah everything that had happened (and said), “I fear that something may happen to me.” Khadeejah replied, “Never! By Allaah, Allaah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones.” Khadeejah [radiyallaahu anhaa] then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqah bin Naufal bin Asad bin ‘Abdul ‘Uzza, who, during the Period of Ignorance became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allaah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadeejah said to Waraqah, “Listen to (the story of) your nephew, 0 my cousin!” Waraqah asked, “0 my nephew! What have you seen?” Allaah’s Messenger described whatever he had seen. Waraqah said, “This is the same one [who keeps the secrets i.e., angel Jibril (Gabriel)] whom Allah had sent to Moosaa (Moses). I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out.” Allah’s Messenger asked, “Will they drive me out?” Waraqah replied in the affirmative and said, “Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day (when you will be turned out) then I would support you strongly.” But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Revelation was also paused for a while. [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari. Hadeeth Number 3]

Few Beneficial Points Extracted From This Hadeeth

[1] The subject matter in this hadeeth is about the beginning of the revelation, which was sent down to the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi wasallam] in Ramadhaan.

[2] Surah Iqarah was the first part of the Qur’aan revealed to him.

[3] Jibreel [alayhis salaam] used to bring the revelation to him [sallal-laahu alayhi-wasallam]

[4] Truthfulness of the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] prior to being sent as a Messenger: Khadeejah said to him: ‘’Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones.”

[5] The revelation that was sent down to the Prophets was well known to the scholars of the people of the scripture.

[6] How to understand this hadeeth together with the hadeeth reported by Jaabir [radiyallaahu anhu] in which it is mentioned that Surah Al-Mud-dath-thir was the first revealed surah: What is intended in the hadeeth reported by Jaabir [radiyallaahu anhu] is that Al-Mud-dath-thir was the first Surah sent down as a command to the Messenger to warn [against Shirk, disbelief, disobedience] and call [to Tawheed, Eemaan, Islaam]. And Surah Iqrah [was the first Surah revealed to inform him that] he has been given the station of a Prophet.

[7] One should give concern to the subject matter regarding knowledge of the revelation, and this is proven by Aa’isha’s dedication to the subject matter regarding how the revelation began.

A Faa’idah From Imaam Ash-Shawkaanee [rahimahullaah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestowed of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother bears him with hardship and she brings him forth with hardship, and the bearing of him, and the weaning of him is thirty (30) months, till when he attains full strength and reaches forty years, he says: “My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds, such as please You, and make my off-spring good. Truly, I have turned to You in repentance, and truly, I am one of the Muslims (submitting to Your Will).”
Imaam Ash-Shawkaanee [rahimahullaah] said:
And in this Aayah [there is evidence to show that] indeed it is befitting for the one who has reached the age of forty to increase in making these supplications.
My Lord!

Verify, Contemplate And Ask The Scholars Before Speaking, For Indeed Sometimes The Transmitters Harbour Evil Intentions Or Are Genuinely Mistaken! – A Brief Reminder By Shaikh Uthaymeen

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestowed of Mercy

Shaikh Uthaymeen [rahimahullaah] said:

Verification is one of the most important affairs, if not the most important. Verifying what is transmitted from others is an important affair, because sometimes the transmitters harbour evil intentions, so they transmit – intentionally and deliberately – that which will tarnish the reputation of the one they transmit from. And sometimes they do not harbour an evil intention, but they understand something in a manner that is opposite to what is intended by it.
Therefore, it is obligatory to verify. So, when the proof [sound source] of the transmission is established, then the one from whom the statement was transmitted is engaged in a discussion [or his statement is examined] before a judgement is passed to [establish] as to whether it is a mistake or not. That is because it may become clear to you – by way of discussion [or observation] – that the one from whom the statement was transmitted is correct.
And if not, then what is [well] known is that if a person were to immediately pass a judgement merely based on what he hears, he will transmit things [i.e. statements, views, opinions etc] from some of the scholars – those considered to be the beacons of [Sharee’ah] knowledge – that which the souls will dislike; but when one verifies, contemplates and attaches himself to the Shaikh [or has close contact with the Shaikh], he [i.e. the Shaikh] will make the affair clear for him.

Sit Down And Learn From The Scholars – [A Brief Reminder By Shaikh Rabee (hafidhahullaah)]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

How can you not humble yourself in the presence of a scholar and sit on your knees in his presence with [good] etiquettes and take [knowledge from] him! We do not declare personalities to be free from shortcomings nor do we exaggerate their status, but we [deal with them based] on [good] etiquettes and honor [them]; and we acknowledge – in particular – the station of the scholars of the Sunnah, for indeed the scholars of bidah are not scholars [in reality].
The [true] scholars are those scholars who [possess sound understanding] of the Book of Allaah – the scholars of Tawheed and the [authentic] Sunnah. As long as they do not [hold and propagate] speech that is tantamount to [clear error or misrepresentation], excess and slanderous speech, as is the case with others, then we sit with this scholar and learn from him.

A Type of Misdeed Committed By a Student of Knowledge Against Himself And Others – [A Brief Reminder By Shaikh Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah)]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

If we saw a student of knowledge sitting in a gathering of jest, chitchatting and evil, then the [fact that] he has committed a misdeed against himself becomes a manifest and serious [affair]. And this [deed is also] an offence against knowledge and the people of knowledge, because [some other] people are likely to say: “These are students of knowledge and this is the end result of knowledge.” Therefore, he [i.e. the student who sits in a gathering of evil] has [in this case] committed a misdeed against himself and others.

Muhammad Ibn Al-Hasan [rahimahullaah]: Why Did He Remind The People About a Book on Business Transactions When They Asked Him to Author a Book on Zuhud?- [A Short Faa’idah By Shaikh Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah)]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy
It was said to Muhammad Ibn Al-Hasan Ash-Shaybaaniy [rahimahullaah]:
“Will you not author a book on Zuhud?” He said: “Indeed, I have written a book on business transactions.”
Shaikh Uthaymeen [rahimahullaah] said: “When it was sought from Muhammad Ibn Al-Hasan [rahimahullaah] to author a book on Zuhud, he said, “Indeed, I have written a book on business transactions”; because whoever is acquainted with business transactions and its [sound Islamic] rulings, he will avoid haraam and declare lawful what is to be declared lawful, and this person is the Zaahid [i.e. a person of abstinence in reality].

A Faa’idah Related to Aayah Ninety ‘Surah An-Nahl’ -[By Sh Saaleh Aala Ash-Shaikh (hafifhahullaah)]

Verily, Allah enjoins Al-Adl (i.e. justice and worshipping none but Allah Alone – Islamic Monotheism) and Al-Ihsan [i.e. to be patient in performing your duties to Allah, totally for Allah’s sake and in accordance with the Sunnah (legal ways) of the Prophet in a perfect manner], and giving (help) to kith and kin (i.e. all that Allah has ordered you to give them e.g., wealth, visiting, looking after them, or any other kind of help, etc.): and forbids Al-Fahsha’ (i.e all evil deeds, e.g. illegal sexual acts, disobedience of parents, polytheism, to tell lies, to give false witness, to kill a life without right, etc.), and Al-Munkar (i.e all that is prohibited by Islamic law: polytheism of every kind, disbelief and every kind of evil deeds, etc.), and Al-Baghy (i.e. all kinds of oppression), He admonishes you, that you may take heed.

What Will Make a Person to Truly Fear Allaah?! – [A Brief Reminder By Shaikh Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah)]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy
Shaikh Uthaymeen [rahimahullaah] said:
Khash’yah is the basis of [sound] knowledge. It is ‘Fear of Allaah’ that is founded upon knowledge and exaltation [i.e. exalting Allaah]. And due to this Allaah [The Most High] said:
It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allaah.
[Surah Al-Faatir’ Aayah 28]
If a person knows Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] based on sure knowledge and in the manner in which a person should be acquainted with who Allaah is, then fear of Allaah must enter his heart, because he becomes acquainted with the Great Lord [i.e. The Creator of everything, The All-Provider and the One with absolute dominion over everything], The All-Powerful, The Irresistible and The All-knower of everything that is concealed and hidden from humans [and the entire creation], so you find him – completely- being obedient to Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic].

A Brief Reminder Regarding Supplication When Entering And Exiting The Masjid- By Shaikh Abdul Muhsin Al-Abbaad [Hafidhahullaah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

It is appropriate that when entering the Masjid, one asks Allaah for mercy, for he [i.e. person] came whilst hoping for Allaah’s Mercy and Reward. And it is appropraite that when leaving the Masjid, he asks Allaah for His Bounty, because he leaves the Masjid whilst hoping for Allaah’s bounty and provision, and this is similar to what is stated in Surah Al-Jumu’ah, [because] Allaah forbids [us from engaging in] buying and selling when the A’dhaan of Jumu’ah is heard, but permits [us] to disperse in the land and seek His bounty after the Jumu’ah prayer. Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] said:
O you who believe [Muslims]! When the call is proclaimed for the Salat [prayer] on the day of Friday [Jumu’ahprayer], come to the remembrance of Allah [Jumu’ah religious talk [Khutbah] and Salat [prayer] and leave off business [and every other thing], that is better for you if you did but know!
Then when the [Jumu’ah] Salat [prayer] is finished, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allah [by working, etc.], and remember Allah much, that you may be successful.
[Surah Al-Jumu’ah’ Aayaat 9 – 10]
