The Effects of Tawheed at the time of death—Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) stated:

The Shahaadah ‘None has the right to be worshiped except Allaah’ (uttered) at the time of death has a great effect in wiping away evil deeds and nullifying them. That is because it is a testimony from a slave who is certain of it and has knowledge of its meaning. All his desires come to an end; his rebellious soul (becomes) mild and submissive after being in (a state of) refusal and disobedience; approving after turning away, and humbled after being held in high esteem. Its (i.e. the heart and the soul) eagerness for the worldly life and its merits departs-cut off (from everything) in the presence of its Lord, Originator and true Protector. Humble to Him, hopeful of His Pardon Forgiveness and Mercy. The Oneness of Allaah frees and cuts it off from the means to Shirk and the reality of its falsity is established; so those wishes which it busied itself with ceases and all its concern is (directed towards) The One it is certain to meet (i.e. Allaah).

The slave entirely focuses on Allaah- turning towards Allaah with his heart, soul and desire; submitting to Him alone inwardly and outwardly.  His inward affair (i.e. the heart and soul) and outward affair (i.e. what he proclaims) become the same, and he sincerely says: “None has the right to be worshiped except Allaah.” Indeed, his heart is freed from attachment to other than Allaah and departs from inclining towards other than Him. All the worldly life departs from his heart and thus he is about to stand in the presence of his Lord. The intensity of his desires is extinguished and his heart is filled with the (affair) of the afterlife, so it becomes the attention of his eyes and the worldly life is (placed) behind him.

This sincere testimony becomes his last deed–purifying him of his sins and thus he is entered (into a noble position) by his Lord because he meets his Lord with a truthful and pure testimony, whose outward manifestation is in agreement with (what is hidden in the heart and soul). If he stated this (type) of testimony during the time of well-being, he would have deserted the world and its people-fleeing to Allaah from the people and leaving everything else other than Him. However, he made this testimony (in the world) with a heart filled with desires, love of life and its means of subsistence….

If you see your time elapsing and your lifespan dwindling—Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh al-Uthaymeen

Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) stated:

If you see that your time is elapsing and your lifespan dwindling, whilst you have not produced anything beneficial nor useful, nor do you find a blessing in your time, then beware (lest you be from those included in) the statement of Allaah (The Most High):

وَلَا تُطِعْ مَنْ أَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهُ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ وَكَانَ أَمْرُهُ فُرُطًا

”And obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, one who follows his own lusts and whose affair has been lost.” [18:28]

That is: His affair has strayed and become disconcerted, and there is no blessing in it. It should be known that some people do remember Allaah, however he (or she) remembers (Allaah) with a heedless heart and for that reason he (or she) does not benefit. Indeed the person who remembers Allaah with his (or her) tongue and not with his (or her) heart is deprived of blessings in his (or her) deeds and time, until his (or her) affair is lost. You find him (or her) hanging around for long hours and he (or she) does not achieve anything. However, if his (or her) affair was with Allaah (i.e. truly spent in attentiveness to Allaah), he (or she) would have received blessings in all his (or her) actions. [Tafseer Soorah Al-Kahf of Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah)] [1] [End of quote]

So we remind ourselves of the following Aayaat, so that we do not lose hope in Allaah’s Mercy and rush to repentance. Allaah (The Most High) said:

Say: “O ‘Ibadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

“And turn in repentance and in obedience with true Faith (Islamic Monotheism) to your Lord and submit to Him, (in Islam), before the torment comes upon you, then you will not be helped.

“And follow the best of that which is sent down to you from your Lord (i.e. this Qur’an, do what it orders you to do and keep away from what it forbids), before the torment comes on you suddenly while you perceive not!” [2]

Few Reminders about the Month of Al-Muharram-Protect your families from Innovations, Exageration and Falsehood!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

The Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) stated about fasting on the Day of Aa’shooraa:

أَحْتَسِبُ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ

“I hope that (Allah) will expiate the (minor) sins committed prior to it. [1]

The above narration is one of the authentic proofs that establishes the virtues of the Day of Aa’shooraa. However, there are no authentic proofs to show that one fasts the month of Al-Muharram with the intention that it is the first month of the Hijri Calendar nor as act of bidding farewell to the last month of the year. All the narrations transmitted in this regard are fabricated. It is also not established with authentic proof in the Islamic legislation that the first night of Al-Muharram is to be devoted in prayer, remembrance of Allaah, supplication and so on.

However, there is no doubt about the virtue of the day of Aa’shooraa within the month of Al-Muharram. It was the day in which Allaah (The Most High) saved Moosaa (alayhis-salaam) and Bani Israa’eel from the tyranny of Pharaoh and his armies. It has been reported in Bukhaari and Muslim on the authority of Ibn Abbaas (radiyallaahu-anhumaa) who stated:

The Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Aa’shooraa’. He said, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘This is great day; it is the day when Allah saved Moosaa and his people [i.e. Children of Israel] and drown Pharaoh and his people, so Musa fasted on this day in thanksgiving to Allaah, and so we (also) fast this day.’ He [i.e. the prophet] said: ‘We have more right to Musa than you,’ so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day.” [2] (Note: After fasting the month of Ramadhaan was legislated, fasting the day of Aa’shooraa no longer became obligation)

It is also Mustahab (recommended) that one fasts the 9th of Al-Muharram alongside the day of Aashooraa (i.e. the tenth of al-Muharram) because this is what the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) stated at the end of his life; he said: [لَئِنْ عِشْتُ لأَصُومَنَّ التَّاسِعَ وَالعَاشِرَ] If I live till (next year), I will fast the ninth.’’ [3] This is done in order to oppose the Yahood, who used to single out the day of Ashooraa for fasting.

Likewise, nothing authentic has been transmitted from the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and his companions (radiyallaahu-anhum) that the day of Aashooraa is a day of celebration or that it is a day in which a person shows kindness to his family by spending on them; nor it is a day of sadness in which one hits him/herself; pulling his/her; slapping his/her cheeks and shedding blood (i.e. this is the practice of the Raafidah). All these affairs are in opposition to the pure and authentic Sunnah of the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam). The Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said:

من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد

‘’Whoever innovates into this affair of ours (i.e. in Islaam) that which is not from it will have it rejected.’’ [4]

The Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) also said:

إِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحْدَثَاتِ الأُمُورِ فَإِنَّ كُلَّ مُحْدَثَةٍ بِدْعَةٌ وَكُلَّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلالَةٌ

”Beware of newly invented affairs (in the religion); for indeed every newly invented affair (in the religion) is an innovation and every innovation (in the religion) is misguidance.’’ [5]

It is well known by way of the Islamic legislation that the specified holidays, the days of celebration and important days attributed to the religion are legislated affairs of worship. And the ruling on acts of worship is that they are Tawqeefiyyah (i.e. they have to be established by way of authentic text in the Islamic legislation) as stipulated in the fundamental principles of the Islamic legislation. This is because Allaah (The Most High) stated:

ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَاكَ عَلَىٰ شَرِيعَةٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْرِ فَاتَّبِعْهَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَاءَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

‘’Then We have put you (O Muhammad) on a plain way of (Our) commandment [like the one which We commanded Our Messengers before you (i.e. legal ways and laws of the Islamic Monotheism)]. So follow you that (Islamic Monotheism and its laws), and follow not the desires of those who know not.’’ [6]

And Allaah (The Most High) said:

أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ شَرَعُوا لَهُم مِّنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَن بِهِ اللَّهُ ۚ وَلَوْلَا كَلِمَةُ الْفَصْلِ لَقُضِيَ بَيْنَهُمْ ۗ وَإِنَّ الظَّالِمِينَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Or have they partners with Allah (false gods), who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed. And had it not been for a decisive Word (gone forth already), the matter would have been judged between them. And verily, for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers), there is a painful torment.’’ [7]

The Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said:

من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد

‘’Whoever innovates into this affair of ours (i.e. in Islaam) that which is not from it will have it rejected.’’ [8]

Likewise, one cannot claim that the innovated practices of the people during the month of Al-Muharram are a demonstration of thankfulness to Allaah or an exaltation of his Prophet! That is because demonstrating one’s thankfulness to Allaah cannot be done by way of legislating something besides Allaah’s legislation. Allaah (The Most High) stated: [وَلَا يُشْرِكُ فِي حُكْمِهِ أَحَدًا And He (Allaah) makes none to share in His Decision and His Rule.] [9]

Rather being thankful to Allaah is done by way of obeying Allaah and to worship Him alone based on what He has legislated. Likewise, one adheres to the authentic Sunnah of the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam)–obeying what the Messenger commanded; keeping away from what he has forbidden; submitting to his rulings and emulating him in his actions; affirming what he has informed you of, and you do not innovate in the religion. Allaah (The Most High) said:

لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْآخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرً

Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much. [10]

Allaah (The Most High) said:

قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Say (O Muhammad to mankind): “If you (really) love Allah then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [11]S

Imaam Ibn Katheer (rahimahullaah) stated:

This noble verse passes a judgement against all those who claim to love Allaah, yet they do not follow the way of Muhammad (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam); for indeed he (i.e. such claimant) is not truthful in his/her claim until he/she follow the shari`ah (Law) of Muhammad and his religion in all his statements and actions, and circumstances (related to the practice of the religion); just as it has been reported in the Saheeh (i.e. Bukhaari and Muslim) that the Messenger (Sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) stated:

مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلًا لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرُنَا فَهُوَ رَد

Whoever performs an act (of worship) that does not conform to our matter (i.e. the religion as it was revealed and practiced by the Prophet), then it (such an act) will be rejected. [12]

And Allaah knows best

”The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves.” [Al-Ahzaab. Ayah:6]

Summarized benefits:

The closest thing a person possesses and the most important thing he has is him/herself. However, the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) is more worthy of person than him/herself. That is because the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) gave them (i.e. the creation) sincere advise, and showed them affection and compassion. There is none who shows the most mercy and compassion to the creation except that the Messenger is the greatest favour amongst the creation to the people than everyone else. That is because neither an atom’s weight of good has reached them nor an atom’s weight of evil is repelled from them, except through him (i.e. due to the message he conveyed to them from Allaah). And for this reason it is obligated on them that when the desires of their souls are in opposition to what the Messenger wants (from them), they should give precedence to what the Messenger wants (from them). They should not oppose the statement of the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) with the statement of anyone else—regardless who that person may be—and they are to sacrifice themselves, their wealth and offspring in giving precedence to loving the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wsallam) over the entire creation. They are not to say anything (i.e. in the religion) until he says so, nor do they put themselves forward before him. [Abridged and Paraphrased from ‘Tayseer Al-Kareem Ar-Rahmaan Fee Tafseer Kalaam al-Mannaan’ of Imaam Sadi (rahimahullaah)]

Every person starts his/her day as a vendor of his/her soul…

The Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said:

كل الناس يغدو فبائع نفسه فمعتقها أو موبقها

‘’Every person starts his day as a vendor of his soul, either freeing it (i.e. from sin) or bringing about its ruin (i.e. through sin)” [1]

AbuBakr Ibn Ayyaash (rahimahullaah) said: A man once said to me when I was a young man: ‘’Save yourself in this worldly life as much as you can by (seeking) after the provision of the afterlife; for indeed the prisoner of the afterlife (i.e. the one condemned in the fire) will never be unfastened. ‘’ [2]

A characteristic of the truthful person—Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

The truthful one (i.e. the one sincere to Allaah in his/her deeds) is the one who does not care if all the status he/she possesses were removed from the hearts of the creation (i.e. the people) for the sake of rectifying his/her heart.

Worship in Winter—Imaam Ibn Rajab (rahimahullaah)

Imaam Ibn Rajab (rahimahullaah) stated:

Indeed, winter is the spring of the believer because during it he enjoys himself in the gardens of obedience to (Allaah) and wanders in the fields of worship, and his heart strolls along in devotion to the acts of worship facilitated within it, just like the animals revel in the pastures of spring; so they put on weight and (the state of) their bodies improve.  Likewise, during winter the believer’s religion is improved through what Allaah has made easy of acts of obedience; for indeed the believer is able to fast the days of winter without difficulty or being troubled by hunger and thirst because its days of fasting are short and cold, and the difficulty in fasting is unnoticed. And it has been reported in Tirmidhee from the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) who said: ”Fasting in winter is an (easily acquired) booty.” [a] [1]

”Its concern to rectify deeds is greater than performing the deed; so it is eager for sincerity in the deed, adherence to the Sunnah of the Messenger and carrying it out perfectly. And alongside this, it bears witness to the favours of Allaah in that deed and its deficiencies in fulfilling the rights of Allaah.
