Our Salaf- Shubah’s [rahimahullaah] Mercy Towards The Poor, Needy and Destitute

Abu Daawood At-Tayaalisee [rahimahullaah] said, ”Once we were with Shu’bah, so Sulaymaan Ibnul Mugheerah [rahimahullaah] came along whilst weeping. Shu’bah [rahimahullaah] said to him, ‘What makes you weep O father of Sa’eed?!’ He said, ‘My donkey died; I missed the Jumu’ah prayer and my needs.’ He (Shu’bah) said, ‘How much did you buy it for?’ He said, ‘Three Dinaars.’ He (Shu’bah) said, ‘I have three Deenaars; by Allaah I do not have other than it. O boy! Bring that scrap of cloth” and in it was three deenaars, so he gave it to him (i.e. Sulaymaan) and said, ‘Buy a donkey and do not weep.’ ”

Love of Leadership, Pride and Self-Amazement Leads to Persistence Upon Falsehood

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful The Bestower of Mercy

Returning to the truth is better than persistence upon falsehood; because persistence upon falsehood is proof of being forsaken, as Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) stated in Al-Fawaa’id: ”To be forsaken is that Allaah leaves you to yourself.”  The reasons behind persisting in  falsehood- after it has been made manifest -are many. From them:

[1]The First Affair:

Love of authority and Leadership:

Imaam Shaatibee (rahimahullaah) said in Al-Itisaam: ‘’The last thing that lands upon the hearts of the righteous people is love of authority and  leadership.’’

Ibraaheem Bin Adham (rahimahullaah) said: ‘’The person who loves fame will not be sincere to Allaah.’’

Al-Haafidh Adh-Dhahabee (rahimahullaah) added a commentary (on the above statement), saying: ‘’The signs of the sincere one who loves fame and is unaware of it, is that when he is scolded about it he neither becomes furious nor does he free himself from it; rather he acknowledges and says: May Allaah have mercy upon the one who shows me my faults.  He does not  become amazed with himself–being unaware of those faults, rather being unaware that he is unaware; for this  is a chronic illness.’’

Abu Nu’aym (rahimahullaah) said: ‘’By Allaah, the one destroyed is not destroyed except through love of leadership.’’

[2] The Second Affair:

Pride and refusing to accept the truth:

Imaam Sufyaan Bin Uyaynah (rahimahullaah) said: ‘’The sensible person is not the one who knows good and bad, rather the sensible person is the one who follows the truth when he sees it and keeps away from evil when he sees it.’’

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said in Al-Fawaa’id: And from the signs of well-being and success is that whenever the slave is increased in his knowledge, he increases in humility and mercy.  And whenever he is increased in action, he increases in his fear and caution; and whenever his age is increased, he decreases in eagerness (for worldly things); and whenever he is increased in wealth, he increases in his generosity and spending; and whenever his status and honor is increased, he increases in coming close to the people, in fulfilling their needs and being humble in (their presence).

And the signs of wretchedness are: Whenever he is increased in knowledge, he increases in pride and haughtiness; and whenever he is increased in actions, he increases in his boasting, mockery of the people and having a good opinion of himself; and whenever he is increased in his status and honor, he increases in pride and haughtiness. These affairs of (wellbeing and wretchedness) are a trial and a test from Allaah by which He puts His slaves to the test.  He brings about wellbeing and wretchedness to a people by way of these affairs.

Abu Ad-Dardaa (radiyallaahu-anhu) said: ‘’The signs of ignorance are three: Self-amazement, excessive speech in that which does not concern (a person) and that you do forbid something you do.’’

It is reported from Ali Bin Abee Taalib (radiyallaahu-anhu) that he said: ‘’Self-amazement is the plague of the Al Al-baab (i.e. the heart, mind, intellect etc).’’ And others besides him said: ‘’You do not see a person amazed with himself, except that he is a seeker of leadership.’’

A person must fully know that Allaah is absolutely acquainted with his (affairs), and that He knows the treachery of the eyes and what the hearts conceal. And that the hearts are between two fingers from the fingers of Allaah, and He turns them how He pleases. Ibn Abee Haatim reported in Az-Zuhd from Al-Hasan who said: ‘’Indeed, the hearts are more severe in losing control than feathers are on a stormy day.’’ [End of quote]

O Allaah! Protect Us From Being Deceived By This Short Lived Worldly Life..Aameen

And put forward to them the example of the life of this world, it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is Able to do everything. Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world. But the good righteous deeds (five compulsory prayers, deeds of Allah’s obedience, good and nice talk, remembrance of Allah with glorification, praises and thanks, etc.), that last, are better with your Lord for rewards and better in respect of hope.

Amazing Indeed is The Affair of That One Who Faces Different Obstacles, Yet His [or Her] is Attached to Ibaadah and Obedience!

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

It is not amazing when one who is healthy and unoccupied adheres to worship of Allaah and obedience to Him; rather what is amazing is the affair of that one who is weak, sick, hindered by affairs that pre-occupies him [or her] and faced with different circumstances, yet his [or her] heart is attached to the worship of Allaah and obedience to Him, and not in opposition to what he [or she] is able to do.

The Tremendous Blessing of Night and Day: O Allaah! Include Us Amongst Those Who Acknowledge Them and Are Grateful to You. Aameen

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah (The Most High) said:

Say (O Muhammad ): “Tell me! If Allah made night continuous for you till the Day of Resurrection, who is an ilah (a god) besides Allah who could bring you light? Will you not then hear?”

Say (O Muhammad ): “Tell me! If Allah made day continuous for you till the Day of Resurrection, who is an ilah (a god) besides Allah who could bring you night wherein you rest? Will you not then see?”

It is out of His Mercy that He has put for you night and day, that you may rest therein (i.e. during the night) and that you may seek of His Bounty (i.e. during the day), and in order that you may be grateful.

Few Reminders From The Above Aayaat

The (night and day) are a bestowal from Allaah to His servants and this should make them  thankful to Allaah, worship Him alone and fulfil His Rights. Allaah- out of His Mercy- created the day for them in order that they may seek after His Bounties- seeking after their provisions and livelihoods during daylight. And Allaah created the night for them (as as means of) rest and repose- (allowing) their bodies and souls to take a rest due to tiredness from work during the day. This is a bounty of Allaah (bestowed) on His servants and Mercy (from Him). Is there anyone who is able to do this (besides Allaah)?

And regarding the night (i.e. after Allaah made it known that He was the one who appointed the night for them), He said: [أَفَلَا تَسْمَعُونَ  -Then will you not then hear]; and regarding the day (i.e. after Allaah made it known that He was the one who appointed the day for them), He said: [أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ  –  Then will you not then see?]; this is because the (faculty) of hearing is sharper than the (faculty) of sight during night time, and the (faculty) of sight is sharper than the (faculty) of hearing during day time.

In these Aayaat (i.e. Al-Qasas 71, 72 & 73) the servant is exhorted to ponder upon the blessings Allaah has bestowed on him (or her). He (or she) should contemplate (upon what the state of affairs would have been) if such blessings were absent, for if a servant were to contemplate (upon the state of affairs due to) the presence (of such blessings) compared (to what the state of affairs would have been if such blessings were) absent, he (or she) will realise the (great) position of this favour; as opposed to the one who merely goes along with the normal state of affairs and considers (these favours) as something  that will neither cease to carry on nor come to an end. So his (or her) heart is hindered from praising Allaah for these blessings and from realising that he (or she) is in need of Allaah every time. This (state of affairs) neither prompts his (or her) thoughts towards thanksgiving nor remembrance.
